Fulbright Scholarship Programs Application Form For Nigerian Students 2024 – How To Apply

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program is a scholarship program funded by the U.S. government that provides opportunities for graduate students, young professionals, and artists from around the world to study and conduct research in the United States. The program is designed to promote cultural exchange and mutual understanding between the United States and other countries.

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program is open to citizens of more than 155 countries who hold a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent. Applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency and have a strong academic record and a clear research proposal.

The scholarship provides funding for tuition, airfare, a living stipend, and health insurance for the duration of the program. The duration of the program varies depending on the field of study, but generally ranges from one to two years.

In addition to the financial support, Fulbright Foreign Student Program scholars are also provided with opportunities for cultural exchange and professional development. They participate in events and activities organized by the Fulbright program, engage with other Fulbright scholars, and have access to resources and opportunities to connect with the broader academic and professional communities in the United States.

To apply for the Fulbright Foreign Student Program, interested applicants should contact the Fulbright Commission or U.S. Embassy in their home country for more information and application instructions. The application deadline varies depending on the country, but generally falls in the late fall or early spring of the year prior to the program start date.

The grant also covers basic university health insurance as a primary insurance coverage and the Fulbright ASPE health benefit as secondary coverage.

To be eligible for a grant:

  1. Applicants must be citizens or nationals of Nigeria, or permanent residents holding a valid passport issued by the government of Nigeria.
  2. Applicants must be DOCTORAL OR PHD students who have completed a significant amount of their doctoral program in Nigerian universities and have the endorsement of their home institution.
Note: MASTERS and First-Degree applicants are NOT qualified to apply for this program.
  3. Applicants must have an outstanding academic record and high level of English proficiency.
  4. Applicants must take their first TOEFL exam by May 2023.
  5. Applicants must meet the minimum score on required standardized tests (TOEFL: a score of 90)
  6. Applicants must have high motivation and a serious commitment to completing the program as scheduled and to returning home.
  7. Only applicants with strong proposals, outlining their research objectives, methodology, time-frame, and justification for conducting the research in the U.S. will be short-listed for interviews.
  8. Preference will be given to applicants who have not studied in the U.S.
  9. Those in business, law and accounting should understand that most U.S. institutions rarely accept research students in these fields due to high demand for full-time programs and tuition concerns. Therefore, we face great challenges in finding placements for such grantees unless their proposals are tilted toward economics, development-related areas, democracy, human rights and conflict resolution.
