These CBN governors have served their 5 year tenures and left, so far, Godwin Emefiele, the past CBN Governor was the longest serving Governor of the apex bank. He served 2 tenures under former president of Nigeria, Mohammad Buhari.

Like we mentioned earlier in this article, the current acting governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria is Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi.

Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi’s Profile:

Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, the newly appointed acting governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), took up the role of leading the Operations Directorate on October 17, 2018. Born on March 7, 1962, he possesses two advanced degrees—a Master’s in Business Administration and another in Mechanical Engineering—from the esteemed University of Lagos. The acting governor of Nigeria’s apex bank has an impressive career spanning over 30years where he has gathered valuable expertise in the banking sector.

Prior to his appointment as the Managing Director/CEO of the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System PLC from 2012 to 2018, Shonubi served as the Executive Director of Information Technology and Operations at Union Bank of Nigeria Plc. He also held positions on the boards of Union Homes and Renaissance Securities Nigeria Limited, where he oversaw the IT infrastructure across Africa.

Between 1999 and 2007, he worked as the Deputy General Manager at MBC International, overseeing IT operations, and held prominent roles at First City Monument Bank Limited and Ecobank Nigeria Limited. Notably, Shonubi served as the Head of Treasury Operations at Citibank Nigeria Limited from 1990 to 1993. Throughout his career, he actively participated in various sub-committees of the Bankers’ Committee, including the Ethics and Professionalism sub-committee.

On the 9th June of 2023, President’s Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Adebisi Sonubi, the deputy governor in charge of operations, has was appointed to assume the role of the acting Governor of CBN pending a new resolution.

CBN Governor’s Responsibility:

  1. The CBN governor is in charge of formulating and implementing monetary policy, determining interest rates, and channeling money supply in order to achieve price stability; regulating and supervising the banking and financial systems, managing foreign reserves, and ensuring financial market stability. The governor takes active roles in shielding national economies from major crises that could have pushed them off the cliff.
  2. Keeping the Nigerian naira stable.
  3. Ensure that Inflation, interest rates, foreign reserves, and the review of the government budget are all monitored and controlled.
  4. He also recommends and grants approval to the country’s commercial banks.

As part of its efforts to stimulate infrastructure development across the country, the CBN established a N15 trillion infrastructure development company in collaboration with the fiscal authorities (Infraco). Furthermore, Emefiele was instrumental in the formation of the private-sector-led Coalition against COVID-19 (CACOVID), which was able to mobilize billions of naira and has greatly aided the country’s COVID-19 fight by establishing healthcare facilities across the country and distributing palliatives to states.

The health sector facility provided loans to pharmaceutical companies in order for them to expand or open drug manufacturing facilities in the country. Overall, the CBN recently disclosed that 585,593 beneficiaries had received ₦462.722 billion from its various intervention schemes as of May 28, 2021. According to a breakdown, ₦157.517 billion has been disbursed for 29 real sector projects under the Real Sector Support Facility- Differentiated Cash Reserve Requirement since January 2021. (RSSF-DCRR).

Furthermore, ₦26.008 billion has been disbursed for 10 projects under the COVID-19 manufacturing intervention schemes from January 2021 to date, while ₦255.992 billion has been disbursed for 78 projects under the CMIS from the first month of 2020 to the 28th day of the 5th month, 2021.

However, following the drive for Youth capacity building, the sum of ₦3, 004, 5555,000 has been disbursed under the Nigerian Youth Investment Fund (NYIF) to 7,057 beneficiaries as of May 28, 2021, while the sum of ₦85, 190, 160, 367.80 has been disbursed under the Micro Small and Medium Enterprises Development Fund (MSMEDF) to 746 beneficiaries as of May 28, 2021, and the sum of ₦6 billion has been disbursed under the Micro Small and Medium.

Furthermore, as of May 28, 2021, a total of ₦173, 419,822.07 has been disbursed to 67 beneficiaries through the Youth Enterprise Development Fund (YEDF). YEDP disbursement by geopolitical zone revealed that 39 beneficiaries in the South-west received N98, 570,852.07; 11 beneficiaries in the North-central received ₦28, 805, 740; and eight beneficiaries in the South-east received ₦22, 050,000.

Furthermore, six beneficiaries received ₦16, 023,230 from the South-South; two beneficiaries received N4, 970,000 from the North-West; and one beneficiary received N3,000,000 from the North-East. A breakdown of the N100 billion healthcare facility revealed that applications for 222 projects totaling ₦177.424 billion have already been received.
