LASU Launches Groundbreaking Postgraduate Programmes in Peace and Security Studies

Lagos State University’s Centre for Peace and Security Studies has officially kicked off its postgraduate programmes with an orientation ceremony on Saturday, 8th January 2025. The event, held at the Aderemi Makanjuola Lecture Theatre, marked a significant milestone as the institution welcomed its first cohort of students into five specialized programmes:

Academic Ph.D.
Professional Doctorate
Academic Master’s
Professional Master’s
Postgraduate Diploma

A Transformative Journey Begins

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Oseni Taiwo Afisi, congratulated the new students on becoming pioneers in the field. He described their academic pursuit as a “transformative journey into excellence, critical thinking, and cutting-edge research.”

Emphasizing the Centre’s role as a research hub, he encouraged students to explore solutions to pressing security issues such as banditry, cattle rustling, and terrorism. He reassured them of the university’s unwavering support, stating, “The Centre has experts who will bring out the best in you, and the university management is committed to the success of these programmes.”

A Multidisciplinary Centre for Global Impact

In his address, the Director of the Centre for Peace and Security Studies, Prof. Adewunmi Falode, highlighted the unique nature of the Centre, stating:

🟢 “This is LASU’s only multidisciplinary centre, where every faculty is represented.”
🟢 “In Nigeria and across the world, peace and security remain pressing concerns, and this programme will equip students with the expertise to tackle these challenges.”

He also praised the Vice-Chancellor for her vision, revealing that the Centre was initiated in August 2024 and has since received full backing from university management.

Also speaking at the event, Prof. Ibrahim Olateju, Dean of the Postgraduate School, reassured students of LASU’s commitment to timely graduation:

📌 “At LASU, a two-year course takes exactly two years, and a four-year course takes four years. You will graduate on time.”

He also highlighted the university’s technology-driven approach, allowing students to choose between physical and virtual classes and examinations.
