IBBUL Punches Above Its Weight for World University Games Glory

As the world gears up for the July 2026 World University Games in Germany, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL), is ready to make its mark. Against all odds, this underdog institution has earned its spot in two fiercely competitive events: Taekwondo and the 1,500m athletics race. This isn’t just a win—it’s a bold statement of grit, talent, and unshakable resolve from IBBUL’s students, coaches, and support crew.

At the high-stakes pre-qualification showdown in the University of Jos, where over 50 Nigerian universities battled for supremacy, IBBUL’s stars shone bright. Shittu Ridwan Ola, a Taekwondo dynamo in the -74kg category, didn’t just compete—he dominated, clinching the Gold Medal with jaw-dropping skill and relentless drive. Meanwhile, Mohammed Jibrin Isah blazed through the 1,500m athletics event, securing a Silver Medal with a display of speed and stamina that left spectators in awe.

IBBU Qualifies for world game in Germany

Dr. Mohammed Aliyu, IBBUL’s Director of Sports, couldn’t hide his pride. “Qualifying in even one event would’ve been enough to put us on the global stage,” he said, “but two? That’s a game-changer.” He tipped his hat to the University Management for their backing, which made competing in the FISU trials possible, even though IBBUL only entered three events. Aliyu also gave a shout-out to the tireless team behind the scenes: Sports Officer BM Dzukogi, Head Coach Adamu Kuta, Athletics Coach Dr. Dahiru, Tennis Coach Adamu Kagara, and Taekwondo Coach Saddiq Muhammad.

What makes this triumph even more remarkable? IBBUL’s sports facilities are barely scraping by. “We’re working with next to nothing,” Aliyu admitted, “yet our students pulled off the impossible.” With a new Vice Chancellor stepping in, he’s throwing down the gauntlet: invest in sports infrastructure. “Build us a proper Directorate of Sports—start small, maybe next to the Professorial office building,” he urged. “Give our students the tools to keep winning.”
