Freedom is defined as the state of not being a prisoner or slave. When someone has the right to do or say what he wants without anyone stopping or hindering a man to be afflicted, punished or restricted without justifiable reasons.


What is freedom? Freedom is the liberation from bondage, oppression and hindrance individuals families communities are in bondage today freedom is needed in every aspect of someone’s life have the followings as the types of freedom.

Political freedom: A nation is said to be free when he has gotten his freedom from the colonial masters. Nigeria got her independence on 1st October 1960. The Nation Nigeria was formally under political bondage of the colonial master.

  1. As a nation, they could not do anything without the approval of their colonia masters. And the National patriotic like Herbert Macauley, Obafemi Awolowo, Br. NnamdiAzikwe, Sir. Ahmadu Bello and the rest and fought the battle of independence. Nigeria got her political freedom on the first of October 1960 after several years of the leadership of the colonial masters.
  2. Economic freedom: A nation, family or individual is said to be economically free where there is no bondage, poverty and starvation people are released from hunger, clothing and shelter. The members in a days wear good cloths and live in a befitting houses. This is also a state where a family or nation is not in starvation or poverty.
  3. Social freedom:  This is an atmosphere where people are free to join or form any legal organisation; people can come together to plant churches, form political parties and hold religious political and social ideologies, without hindrance from any quarter. This is also a state where people are socially educated and are not ignorant of current situations around them and are free to make contributions to the environment and society.   4. Freedom of speech: This is a state where an individual is allowed to air his or her view and make verbal and relevant contribution to matters in any gathering.
  5. Promotion freedom:This freedom helps people to see the importance of freedom and it allows people to choose freely the society and company to associate with without any form of restriction and hindrance.

EXO 2, 3:1-15

MEANING OF POLITICAL FREEDOM: Political freedom is a type of freedom that a nation gets that brings about liberation from bondage and oppression economically, socially and politically. Political freedom enables a nation to live and operate freely without any form of monitoring and control of another people.

This was the type of freedom the Israelites got from the Egyptians through Moses. God called Moses to see to the deliverance  of the children of Israel after the death of Joseph and the Pharaoh who knew the Israelites. But at the emergence of the new Pharaoh the children of Israel were enslaved and were made to suffer a lot and as they daily cry to God for deliverance God called Moses to their rescue and used him. Exodus chapter two.


  1. It allows individuals free access to what they have been previously denied of.
  2. It puts smiles on individual’s faces.
  3. It creates in an individual the sense of belonging.
  4. It enables an individual to be at will to do what he desires to do.
  5. It protects individuals from undue influence of others.

After the death of Joshua, the son of Nun and the servant of God, the Israelites went on apostasy. What is Apostasy? It is the act of rebellion against God.

As a result, God caused their enemies to overpower them and rule over them. And whenever they realized their offences and repented, God would raise a judge to act as a military leader to lead them to battle with their enemies through whom victory is ensured with the backing of God. After the death of Ehud who delivered them the Israelites from the hand of Philistines. They went against the commands of God and God delivered them into the hand of the Canaanites who ruled over them. Jabin was the king of Canaanites, while Sisera was the commander of the army of Canaanites. After oppressing them for years, the people of Israel cried out to God to deliver them.

Deborah the wife of Lapidoth was a faithful woman. As a prophetess in Israel whom God had appointed as a judge in Israel, she was a very courageous woman, God told her to inform Barak the commander of Israelites army to arrange for battle against Canaanites. Barak was not courageous enough and Deborah took over the battle against Sisera who had Nine Hundred Chariots of Iron ready for the battle.

The Canaanite had oppressed the people of Israel cruelly for twenty years. The commander of the army of Canaanite with nine hundred chariot of Iron appointed a time to meet with Deborah and Barak with only ten thousand men of war without chariots. The army of Israel won the battle and the commander fled from the battle field. It was stated in the bible that “And the Lord rooted Sisera and all is chariots and all his army before Barak at the edge of the sword and Sisera alighted from his chariot and flew away on foot”. Judges 4:13-15.

Sisera ran way and hid himself in the tent of Jael the wife of Heber and slept. Jael killed him. The dead body of Sisera was shown to Barak by the woman, the killer.

That was how God delivered Israelites from the oppression of Canaanites. And both the king of Canaan and the commander of the army died in battle front that day.


  1. Even though Deborah was a woman she was courageous to see to the deliverance of the children of Israel from the oppression of the Canaanites. Like Deborah we should be courageous.
  2. Deborah’s response brought liberation to the entire nation. Like Deborah we should always be prompt to God’s call whenever He calls because we may not know who would enjoy freedom from our response to God’s call.

Our great leaders achieved political for us.

The success of Moses in gaining freedom for the Israelites through perseverance and help from God, has inspired great men of all ages to struggle and achieve freedom for their people. The best example is our own country, where our great liberators and national leaders took the responsibility of achieving political freedom for our nation.

Our country was at first free, but the British people came and ruled over us and exploited our natural resources for their own use. Because of the profit they were making from exploiting us.

But God raised up leaders for us who struggled until the British government granted us our freedom. Our first great leader was Herbert Macaulay. He struggled for independence was continued by the Late NnamdiAzikwe, the late chief Obafemi Awolowo and Late Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello. These great leaders struggled till the British colonial government granted us independent on October 1st, 1960.

Our great leaders struggled hard to achieve political freedom for us so that we will be free to determine the destiny of our country by developing our human and natural resources for the benefit of all the people of this great country.


  1. The responsibility of promoting freedom in the society rest all of us. You must learn to take active part in any project designed to promote freedom and Human rights in the society.
  2. With the help of God, Moses persisted and achieved freedom for the Israelites. With God’s help, you must learn to persist in your studies in order to bring honour and glory to your country.
  3. Our independence as a nation is meaningless unless you work hard to promote freedom and Human Rights in all aspects of national life.
  4. You must learn to make our independence meaningful by working hard to promote freedom and Human Rights in the home, school and community.

THE HUMAN RIGHT SOCIETY: The human right commission was established to create an environment for extra judicial, recognition, promotion, protection and enforcement of human rights. It also provides avenue for public enlightenment of human order to raise awareness on human right issue.

The human right society helps to defend rights and privileges entitled to humans. They also help to identify and stand for their rights.

ACTIVITIES OF THE HUMAN RIGHT SOCIETY: They include the following:

  1. They ensure justice prevails.
  2. They fight to see that humans are not denied what they are entitled to.
  3. They act as an intermediary between the government and the people, i.e they speak to the government on behalf of the people.
  4. They organize training workshops for the police on human rights that is aimed at improving their level of compliance with human rights standard in the course of discharging their duties.
  5. They also engage with ministry of education in integration of human right into the school curriculum.
  6. They partner with the NYSC to serve as change agents to advance human rights education and increase awareness in the community where they serve

TOPIC: CALL TO REPENTANCE (2 SAM. 12:7-13; PS 51, JONAH 3:1-10; LUKE 3:1-14; MATT 1:1-12; 1 SAM 3:18; 4: 10-12)

REPENTANCE: This is the noun formed from the word repent

REPENT: This is to feel and show that someone is sorry for something bad or wrong that has been done.

There are two types of repentance:

  1. Repentance from the deceiving mouth: This is a repentance that is not genuine, although the person may be saying the word of repentance to the hearing of people.
  2. Repentance from the heart: It is a genuine repentance from the heart. For Godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation and bring no regret but worldly grief produces death. 2 Corin 7:10.


King David committed the sin of adultery with the wife of Uriah the Hittite, one of his soldiers fighting for him. And the act of sin resulted in pregnancy “So David sent messenger and took her and she came to him and he lay with her. Now she was purifying herself from her uncleanness. Then she returned to her house. And the woman conceived and she went and told David, I am with a child”. 2 Samuel 11:4-5.

God then sent prophet Nathan to go and tell king David his sin. And the man of God came and told king David exactly the message and David admitted his sin and mistake immediately. He started to beg for pardon. “David said to Nathan, I have sinned against the Lord. And Nathan said to David, the Lord also has put away your sins, you shall not die”. 2 Samuel 12:13-14.

God acknowledge the repentance of David through the same prophet Nathan. God told him that his sin had been forgiven. God forgave him so soon because the confession and repentance of his sins came out from genuine and contrite heart.


The people of Nineveh had been in total disobedience to God and had gone deep in their sins and God was no happy with them, as a result God had planned to destroy them if they don’t repent. God had to send Jonah to that city, even though Jonah at first refused and gave excuse, after much torture from God he went and when the people of Nineveh heard Jonah’s message, they repented.

They showed their repentance by tearing their clothes, poured ashes on themselves and went into fasting in repentance of their sins.

  3. It makes man free from guilt and condemnation.

  5. It restores man’s relationship with another.

The date of the beginning of John the Baptist was dated by the reign of Roman Emperor. It was in the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar. The third of the twelve Carsars. He was a very bad emperor he was given to covetousness, drunkenness and cruelty. And Pontius Pilate was a foreigner posted to Jerusalem as the Governor of Judea by the Roman Emperor. These two rulers were oppressing the people of Judea, making them to pay heavy taxes. It was during this, the ministry of John started. The people of Judea were fed up of the ruling of Romans. It was written that the Israel would have messiah who would deliver them. When they heard John crying in the wilderness telling them to repent from their sins because Messiah would soon come. Multitudes went to the wilderness to meet him. They confessed their sins and then asked him what to do. The main counsel of John was that the multitudes should be contended.

He said it was discontent with what they had that made them oppressive an injurious. The people that indulge themselves in discontents would expose themselves to many temptations. And he said to them, rob no one by violence or by false accusation and be content with your wages. (Luke 3:14)

The teaching of John the Baptist is still relevant in the lives of present Nigerians. All the evil practices evangelist, John accused the Israelites of are being practised today in Nigeria. The people confessed their sins and repented and then John the Baptist baptised them in the River of Jordan.



  1. Anybody who repents will be forgiven
  2. Anybody who refuses the warning and messages of God will be destroyed
  3. God is not a respecter of man.


Proverbs 29:1 “He who is often reproved yet stiffens his neck will suddenly be broken beyond healing”.

Eli did not do anything to show that he repented from the sin of compromise spoken against him and he perished with his sons. (1 Sam. 4:21).


  1. Acknowledgement of sin.
  2. Confession of sins.
  3. Turning from bad ways to good ways.


  1. Withdrawal of God’s presence.
  2. Unanswered prayers.
  3. Our relationship with God will be affected.
  4. Lost of people’s trust on us.

Different communities, societies and countries have different laws but the main purpose and objective of law remain the same.


Law is a set of rules, regulations established by the people to govern them. It is true that the people want freedom but it is always good to guide freedom so that it will not be misused or abused. The behaviour and conduct of the members in the society have to be guided in such a way as to bring peace, co-existence and good relationship with others. Without laws, members of the society will be doing whatever seems good in their sight. And in a society like that, there will be conflicts, confusion, irregularities, cheating and misbehaviours.

COMMANDS: These are orders given by superior authorities, which must be obeyed or comply with. The school authority may give an order concerning studies, examinations payment of levies and others. Such commands or orders are unquestionable. The student must strictly follow the order.

  2. Law helps the society to set a pattern for their ways of life
  3. Law helps to preserve justice and fear play
  4. The society will live happily and have good relationship with others where law is maintained.



Disobedience is the failure or refusal to do what the law, order, rules, tell or instruct someone. Any citizen that wilfully disobeyed the law of the land or nation will face the punishment attached to such law.

The word of God says “Even the sinner cannot go unpunished”. Be assured an evil man will not go unpunished”. (Proverbs 11:21).

The national law of our land had, jailed, fined, caned, even put to death many disobedient citizens.

The word of God says “For whoever shall do any of these abominations the person’s that do them shall be cut off among their people”. Leviticus 18:29.


As Christian students we must not do or engage in any criminal activity that will amount to disobeying the law of the land.

TOPIC: GOD’S LAW IN THE OLD TESTAMENT (EX. 29:1-17, MATT 5:1-13, JOHN 15:9-11)

God’s law is the supreme law which people use in different societies and nations.

Human laws have their origin from the law of God. During the old testament when the Israelites were taken out of Egypt and God was taking them to the promised land, He decided to give them laws. God did not want his young nation (Israel) to live uncontrolled life. There must be law for them to keep and it would guide and regulate their behaviours.


  1. You shall have no other gods besides me.
  2. You shall not make for yourself any graven image.
  3. You shall not call the name of God in vain.
  4. Remember to keep the Sabbath day holy.
  5. Honour your father and mother that your days may be long on earth.
  6. You shall not murder.
  7. You shall not commit adultery.
  8. You shall not steal
  9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.
  10. You shall not covet your neighbour’s house, wife, servant and property.

The ten commandments were designed by God to regulate the behaviour of people of Israel.

The law underlined how we should relate with God and our fellow brothers. The Ten Commandments were divided into two parts which comprises number one – four and they are about relationship with God while part two starts from numbers five – ten. These are really concern about our relationship with one another.

God want us to live Holy and Obediently. Even though the people of Israel broke His laws later but it made them to live simple lives to some extent.

The Ten Commandments were given on mount Sinai, when the people of Israel were going to the promised land.

Obeying Ten Commandments would bring peace, harmony, unity, progress and prosperity.

Peace would reign almost everywhere, both in the school, working places, in the community. We must obey the Ten Commandments.
