Chiwetalu Agu is a veteran Nigerian actor, comedian and movie producer who won the 2012 Nollywood award for ‘best actor in indigenous movie (non-English speaking language)’. His usage of specific language slang, phrases or clichés in each film has made him uniquely a household name in Nigeria and among Nollywood admirers abroad.
While affirming that comic genres is a unique vehicle in projecting Nigerian culture globally also as establishing the Nollywood brand, Agu is listed as one of the outstanding comedians who have contributed to the event of Nollywood comic genres by Prof. Femi Shaka of the University of Port Harcourt. Agu is married to Nkechi and has three sons and two daughters.
Agu’s prolific works dates back to the transition of Nigerian television soap operas to Nollywood movies. Recently, fast-rising actor, Gideon Okeke criticized Chiwetalu Agu when he took to his social media page to state that Agu should be sanctioned for his use of vulgar language in movies.
Chiwetalu Agu swiftly skilled his criticism by telling the young actor to mind his business and leave the Censor board to do their job. Agu further added that he doesn’t even know who Gideon Okeke is. However, before Agu’s response, thousands of fans had already attacked Okeke which resulted him deleting the post from his Instagram handle. Agu during a recent interview spoke about politics and disclosed that it’s not for him. According to him, politics is a dirty game. He advised his colleagues to not venture into it although he conceded to the very fact that there’s the necessity for the proper people to move the country in the right direction.
Speaking about the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Agu also advised his colleagues using the association to play politics to desist from doing so. He reiterated that these individuals should avoid violence and permit the association move forward peacefully and progressively.
recently Chiwetalu made it known that he has 47 awards and featured in over 727 productions in the last three decades in the industry. That he has been able to exert his influence from Nollywood and this has bore fruit in securing funding for the industry. for instance , the previous President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan approved a whooping sum of N3 billion for Nollywood during his tenure.
