McPherson University to Improve Staff Salaries by 75%

As staff and students returned to McPherson University following the Christmas and New Year holidays in preparation for the second semester, activities resumed seamlessly with a special prayer gathering on Monday morning at the University Chapel.

The event, attended by both academic and non-academic staff, symbolized a unified spiritual start to the new year. It provided an opportunity for the university community to come together in gratitude and seek divine guidance for a successful academic year.

The session, led by University Chaplain Rev. Ibiwunmi Alo, began with heartfelt prayers and worship. She expressed gratitude for the safe return of staff and students, acknowledging God’s protection during the holiday travels. Rev. Alo also prayed for divine blessings on upcoming events, including the 13th Matriculation Ceremony and the combined 8th and 9th Convocation Ceremonies scheduled for February 26th and 28th, respectively. Furthermore, she sought guidance and wisdom to navigate the academic and administrative challenges of 2025.

Following the prayers, Vice Chancellor Professor Francis Igbasan addressed the gathering with a message of appreciation and motivation. He began by commending the staff for their dedication throughout 2024, encouraging everyone to build on the successes of the previous year. Professor Igbasan emphasized the importance of commitment, punctuality, and discipline in achieving the university’s goals.

In his address, the Vice Chancellor addressed staff performance, expressing concerns about tardiness and unprofessional conduct among some employees. He disclosed that two staff members had been identified for such behavior and warned that such lapses would not be tolerated moving forward. He outlined clear consequences, stating, “Two queries will result in no promotion, while one query will mean no salary increment for the next academic year.”

Professor Igbasan also highlighted the importance of fostering positive relationships between staff and students. He urged staff to create a supportive and approachable environment for students, noting that students are the university’s ambassadors. He also called for professionalism, especially among male lecturers, cautioning them against exploiting female students and emphasizing mutual respect and ethical behavior.

Looking ahead, the Vice Chancellor reassured staff that their welfare remains a top priority for the administration. He shared plans to improve staff benefits by up to 75%, contingent on increased student enrollment. This commitment reflects the university’s dedication to retaining talented staff and fostering a productive academic atmosphere.
