The Institute of Petroleum & Energy Studies (IPES), formerly the Institute of Petroleum Studies (IPS), offers a Postgraduate Diploma in Petroleum Technology (PGDPT) aimed at candidates from oil and gas-producing communities and others interested in a career in the petroleum and energy industry. The programme focuses on sustainable development and provides:
- A conducive learning environment with full internet access, a virtual library, and hands-on training using state-of-the-art software.
- Field and laboratory visits, industry case studies, and a collaborative residential experience to foster team spirit.
- A 95% internship and employability rate in the petroleum and energy industry, including a one-year internship with TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited upon completion.
- An opportunity to progress to the MSc in Petroleum Project Development and Energy Transition at IPES.
Programme Details
- Duration: 12 months (intensive, full-time, and fully residential).
- Stability: Unaffected by industrial actions.
- Fees: Non-refundable; tuition-paying programme (candidates must cover costs or secure sponsorship).
- Sponsorship: Full sponsorship available for candidates from the Obagi Oil Fields Host Communities Development Trust (HCDT), including Akabuka, Amah, Egi Clan, Idu Obosiukwu, Obagi, Obite, Ogbogu, Rumuekpe, Ekpeye Clan, and Oboburu.
- Award: Postgraduate Diploma in Petroleum Technology (PGDPT) from the University of Port Harcourt.
Admission Requirements
Candidates must meet one of these criteria:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an NUC-accredited or internationally recognized programme with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division.
- Post-HND Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an NUC-accredited or internationally recognized programme with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division.
- Bachelor’s degree in Physical Sciences (e.g., Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Geology, Geophysics, or Science Laboratory Technology) from an NUC-accredited or internationally recognized programme with a minimum of Second Class Lower Division.
- Completion of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

- Mode: Modular (not semester-based).
- Instructors: Lecturers from the University of Port Harcourt, other Nigerian universities, and petroleum industry experts.
